The Rescue of Whisky and Sherry and Blacky
Whisky is a handsome Terrier boy with a sad story. One of our staff members had seen Whisky beginning of last year, being a pup of just 3 or 4 months old hanging out on the streets in San Esteban, a neighborhood close to our shelter. He looked sweet and healthy but roamed the streets. Now, a good 10 months later, she passed by that neighborhood again and there was Whisky, all grown, now about a year and a half old, and looking really beat up. The face swollen, bite and scratch marks on his face and the neck and torso, he could hardly see anything his eyes were swollen and he was limping a bit.
She investigated and asked around about him, the neighbors there told her that the pup had been around there for months but didn´t have an owner, so everyone threw him a bit food. Close to him was another female dog, and a black male. The neighbors said, they have the same story. When asked why the males looked so beat up it all became clear: none of them are fixed, and every time a female dog in the neighborhood goes into heat, Whisky, his black friend and all the other male street dogs fight over the female. They bite and tear at each other and more often than not, they end up really hurt with ugly bite wounds that get infected because nobody takes care of it since they are street dogs. And the poor females are being harassed and cornered by often 6 or 8 dogs and they can´t get away from them, having to endure the mating procedure with all of them. We managed to take in Whisky and the female dog, whom we named Sherry and we have been treating the black male´s wounds and will get him fixed too.
Whisky´s face was swollen and our vet treated several scratch and bite wounds on him, some of them infected. That´s why he has been very weak too. And he also has a more severe wound on his neck, our vet wanted to put him under anesthesia to be able to examine and attend to all the wounds better and when she tried to put the breathing tube in his throat she found an obstruction that wouldn´t let her do it. His windpipe was damaged or obstructed by something. She couldn´t proceed. Next day we took x-rays and found that his windpipe was collapsed, but lucky for him it still let him breath enough to not suffocate, a fibrosis scarring is formed there and our vet says it´s not operable. But we can give him meds to reduce that and he can live on with the windpipe problem, one just has to be careful, for example he should always wear a harness, not a collar. How sad that this beautiful boy had to go through all that. It is so important to spay and neuter dogs so that this does not happen: Males fighting and suffering severe injuries, females being chased by groups of males and having more unwanted puppies on the street that won´t survive or lead a miserable life on the streets too.
